This past Monday, October 31st, the administration of President Barack Obama challenged a new South Carolina immigration law, its third, arguing that it is unconstitutional and interferes with federal immigration authorities, a Department of Justice spokesman stated. Hours after Judge Lovelace Blackburn upheld controversial parts of the state’s immigration solution, an exodus started. Parts of the law require schools to inquire about immigration status of children signing up for regular classes and gives local police the power to to the same to drivers while in routine traffic stops. Mexican national Jessica Colotl became an inspiration to thousands of undocumented students in the state of Georgia.
Jessica Colotl, a 22 year-old undocumented student that became a symbol among immigrants in Georgia graduated from Kennesaw University. Colotl was an inspiration to thousands of students for her fight against deportation while trying to finish her studies.
Last year, she was stopped for a traffic violation and turned over to immigration authorities when she lacked the legal documentation. She spent over a month in a detention center before she was let out and given permission to stay in the country another year.
Jessica Colotl obtained a major in Political Science and a minor in French.
At 101 years young, a Brownsville woman can now call herself an American citizen. Eulalia Garcia Maturey’s life is filled with history. A hundred and one years ago Tuesday she crossed from Mexico, into the US on a ferry with her Mother.

The Obama administration has replaced immigration raids at factories and farms with a quieter enforcement strategy: sending federal agents to scour companies’ records for illegal immigrant workers, reported The New York Times
While the sweeps of the past commonly led to the deportation of such workers, the “silent raids,” as employers call the audits, usually result in the workers being fired, but in many cases they are not deported. (more…)

Mexico filed the challenge in a U.S. federal court saying it was concerned for possible discrimination acts against its citizens.
“Mexicans citizens will have fear to visit Arizona, whether is for work or pleasure. They will be subject to scrutiny and illegal detention by the Arizona police” detailed the brief by the Exterior Relations ministry of Mexico.
The Mexican government urged the US federal court to block the law and declare it unconstitutional. (more…)
