According to a recent study, Canadians see multiculturalism as an important component of national identity.
As a matter of national policy, Canada actively solicits immigrants and has done so for years. The public supports this and the default political assumption is in support of continued immigration. According to a recent poll, only a third of Canadians believe immigration is more of a problem than an opportunity, far fewer than any other country included in the survey. Rather, Canadians are concerned about “brain waste” and ensuring that foreign credentials are appropriately recognised and rewarded in the job market? Being an immigrant is also no barrier to being a proper Canadian; in parliamentary elections earlier this month, 11% of the people elected were not native. This warm embrace isn’t just a liberal abstraction; 20% of Canadians are foreign-born. (more…)

The Alabama immigration law continues a wave of states passing stringent new immigration laws that began when Arizona enacted legislation that would have allowed police officers to detain anyone who appeared to be an undocumented immigrant and demand papers. It was immediately controversial, with critics warning that it legitimized racial profiling and created a climate of fear — President Obama said it “undermine[d] basic notions of fairness” and Cardinal Roger Mahoney of Los Angeles likened it to Nazism. Authorities in California's Alameda county will have to provide voters with electoral material in Spanish and Chinese.
All voting materials in Alameda County, in California state, must be available in Chinese, Spanish and English, according to an agreement between the county and the federal government .
Among other stipulations of the agreement, the county must appoint coordinators for Chinese and Spanish-language election programs, form a community advisory group and hire more bilingual election officials to ensure voters who speak limited English have fair access to the polls.
The decision follows allegations by the federal government that the county neither employed an appropriate number of bilingual poll officials nor adequately translated and distributed election-related materials, including ballots, registration forms and information found on the county’s website.
According to the 2010 Census, Hispanic and Latino residents made up 22.5 percent of the county’s population while 8.8 percent has Chinese descent.
