The New York Times stated on Thursday October 20 that an efficient way for the barrage of anti-immigrant laws enacted by different states is that the Federal Congress to take action on the matter and take out a true and complete immigration reform.
He noted that such laws injure the nation economically and promote the human rights violations. Over the past six years, Congress has failed more than ten times trying to discuss the reform due to lack, among other things, an agreement between Democrats and Republicans.
States such as Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, South Carolina, Texas and Utah are in use-inspired immigration laws Arizona SB1070. These laws include the criminalization of stay, give the police extraordinary powers to state and local agents to detain individuals if they have reasonable doubt that it is undocumented and requires employers to register with the federal E-Verify program for check the immigration status of workers.
The New York Times noted that in Alabama thousands of immigrants, mostly Hispanic, were forced from their homes, and many businesses closed due to lack of manpower. The situation is so serious that Alabama crops are at risk of not being picked up and lost, wreaking havoc on the state economy, not only there but in Arizona, Georgia and South Carolina.
The newspaper added that immigrants have the knowledge, strength and will to some laborare the field that many Americans do not have, making them an indispensable part of the economic apparatus.
Legal immigrants also are affected, since their appearance classifies them as persecuted, harassed by the authorities, which sometimes exceed them.
The New York Times invited other states plan to implement similar laws to examine the consequences of what is happening there. ”No one is winning here.”
California, Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Mississippi, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas and Wyoming have discussed anti-immigrant laws, but at the end of the discussions given up their respective assemblies.
